Using with Wifi that also has a username

I am hoping to use the Oasis at my school (I work as a school counselor). Is it possible to connect to a WiFi that needs both a username and a password to connect?

Does it direct you to a login page or is it just a hidden network that you manually need to enter the ID for?

If it’s a login page like those that you’d see at an airport, that’ll make connecting fairly challenging. The workaround we recommend in those cases is using a hotspot to connect to the Mini.

It’s not a hidden network and it’s not like an airport one with a separate page. I’ll attach a picture. The app only asks for a password.

To connect using a hotspot, do you need more than one device?

When you connect to the Oasis Mini do you see a list of wifi networks? At the top of that list, you should have a blank field where you can enter the network name.

For some people the hotspot works from a single device, but it seems more robust when people use one device for the hotspot and a second device to connect. We have a connectivity improvement coming out in the next couple of weeks that should further improve hotspot connectivity.

The network pops up at the top of the wifi networks. The problem is that this network uses a username and password. The oasis app when you select the network only asks for a password.

Do you have the option of using a hotspot? This is something we’re working on supporting, but there are all sorts of security restrictions on these sorts of networks that make things challenging.

I only have one device that I would be able to do it on, but would much prefer the WiFi solution.

And I just tried the hotspot and it didn’t work

Cody, if the hotspot solution doesn’t work for you, then you’re just out of luck. I’m in the same boat. If a WiFi network requires a username and password, there is currently no way to connect it to the Oasis mini. Also, some business networks might only require a password, but event still the Oasis mini might not work on it if they have it set up to prevent p2p connections.

Hey Zach, one more question you may be able to help me with. I just talked with our tech guy at school and he may have a workaround.

Is it possible to get the IP address and port that the app works from? That way my school system could (possibly) create a workaround for me.

We have an update coming out in the next couple of weeks that will move away from P2P, and that will likely resolve a lot of the issues with large secured networks.

Wow. That would be awesome. I know you guys have had a ton going on with launching the product so I appreciate that you’re working on this stuff. Can’t wait.

Moving away from P2P in favor of what? All cloud-service controlled?

Yes, IOT solution seems like it will be more stable.

Hmm. I hope you open up the API, or open-source the server side. I’d rather not have the hardware be tied to your existence as a company, and I like using the Home Assistant automation to communicate directly with the Oasis Mini over my local network.
